If i’m tight on time or feeling lazy, I take a few shortcuts when it comes to my personal appearance. I opt for my pearl earrings, a little mascara, and my trustiest companion, lip color. My lips have very little natural pigment to them, so I rarely go without lip color of some sort. It’s the easiest way to awaken my look, and frankly — without it, I look scary! A friend of mine always says how her grandmother never leaves the house without lipstick either — and she jokes that Mimi doesn’t even go to the bathroom in the middle of the night without reapplying her lips. Ha! I love that about Mimi, but that is actually so not me. I hate reapplying lip color. It’s got one shot in the morning, so it better make it a good one. Because of this, I opt for long-lasting lip color. Today, I’m sharing a couple of my tricks and favorite lip products, at a few different price-points.
I always start with lip liner. I used to match the lip liner color to the color of my lipstick, but a few years ago, I heard a tip that you should actually match your lip liner to the color or your lips — and this has made all the difference for me. I fill in my lips completely with Mary Kay’s neutral lip liner before applying any shade of color. This lip liner is actually a shade or two darker than my natural lip (and looks even darker in the picture), but it’s a similar color as my lip– so it works! I also want to try this clear lip liner, because I imagine it would have a similar effect.
As previously mentioned, I don’t reapply — so while I know lip stains aren’t for everyone, they are for me! My favorite lip stain is the Aqua Rouge Liquid Lipstick by Make Up For Ever. I wore this in Rosewood for my wedding, and it was the perfect neutral color and stayed on all day. I don’t reserve this for special occasions only though– I wear it all the time! It just takes one coat, 30 seconds or so to dry, and then a coat or two of the moisturizer on the end, and you’re all set! The only reason I would use it somewhat sparingly is because it’s a little pricier than some of my other tubes.
When I’m looking for a less expensive alternative to the Aqua Rouge Liquid Lipstick, I use Infallible Pro-Last Lipcolor by Loreal. For the price, this is a great option. I’ve tried a few different shades, but my go-to is Toujours Teaberry. Again, same process — a coat of color, dry, then a couple coats of the lip balm.
I have always loved a gloss, so even though they don’t have the staying power of a stain or even lip stick, I still like to use them from time-to-time. I’m a little particular on the texture of a gloss and tend to go for creamier, smoother glosses rather than sticky ones. My trick for strengthening the staying power of a gloss is to layer it on. Assuming it isn’t a sticky gloss, use a lip liner as your base and then put on your first layer of gloss, allow it to soak in slightly, blot with tissue and repeat this process a couple of times.
I love Nars glosses, because they are the perfect texture and offer lots of color options. If I’m going for a less expensive option, I go with Sephora Collection Luster Matte Long-Wear Lip Color in Fig Luster. And for an even less expensive option, I love Colour Riche Extraordinaire Lip Color by Loreal. I typically go with the Molto Mauve shade, but rumor has it that Kim Kardashian wore this gloss in Nude Ballet for her wedding to Kanye West. When a friend of mine shared that celebrity news a while back, it was motivation enough for me to try! (For what it’s worth, the nude is too light for my lips, but at less than $10 a tube, it was worth a shot.)
Any other lip color lovers out there?! I’d love to hear any tips and tricks you have!
